This book challenges the common view that civil wars inevitably hamper economic development, presenting a counter-narrative with evidence from Colombia. It argues that, in some instances, violence from key actors such as the public armed forces and paramilitaries has facilitated economic growth and global trade processes, particularly in the context of international trade and foreign direct investment. While this growth has largely benefitted the elites, it has resulted in severe negative consequences for large segments of the civilian population. The book provides an insightful examination of the impact of civil war on economic globalization, focusing primarily on Colombia and its role in the global economy.
