RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS, CRISIS PREVENTION AND PEACE BUILDING: NIGERIA IN PERSPECTIVES

This study explores the role of religious institutions in crisis prevention and peacebuilding in Nigeria, which has a history of religious and ethnic conflicts. Religious institutions that have been instrumental in advancing peace, resolving disputes, and building communal harmony include the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jama'atul Izalatul Bid'a Wa-Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), and interfaith associations. It finds that they have been effective in peacebuilding through interfaith dialogues, community mediation, and partnerships with various organizations, especially in conflict-prone areas like Borno, Jos, Kaduna, and Sokoto. But obstacles like political meddling, resource scarcity, and religious prejudice prevent them from reaching their full potential. Using a qualitative approach and document analysis, the study examines sermons, reports, and publications to understand these institutions' contributions. The study comes to the conclusion that while religious institutions play a significant role in promoting peace, more cooperation and assistance are required for long-term peace initiatives.
